How to Apply for a Marriage License in Kalamazoo
You and your partner go to the Kalamazoo County Clerk together. Complete the application, show your documents, and pay the fee. After that, the three-day waiting period begins. Michigan law under MCL 551.101 requires this wait. You cannot hold a legal ceremony until it passes. A judge can waive it, but the waiver fee in Kalamazoo County is $35, the highest in the area.
The license is valid for 33 days after the waiting period. Your ceremony must happen within those 33 days. After that, the license expires. Apply about one week before your ceremony date to give yourself a comfortable window.
After the ceremony, your officiant must return the completed license to the Kalamazoo County Clerk within 10 days (MCL 551.104). Two witnesses at least 18 years old must sign at the ceremony. Brief your officiant on both of these requirements before the wedding day.
Required Documents
Both applicants must bring the full set of documents. Do not assume that partial documentation will be enough.
- Valid government-issued photo ID with your current Kalamazoo address (driver's license or state ID)
- Certified birth certificate from a government vital records office (hospital birth records are not accepted)
- Social Security number for each applicant
- If previously married: certified divorce decree or death certificate for the prior spouse
- Full names and birth states of both parents for each applicant
The certified birth certificate is the item most likely to cause problems. Many people still have the hospital-issued birth record their parents kept, but that document is not accepted. You need the certified version from the vital records office of your birth state. Michigan-born applicants can request one from the MDHHS at (517) 335-8666. Out-of-state applicants need to contact their birth state's vital records office.
Birth certificate processing takes time. If you need to order one, do it before you book your ceremony venue. Some states process requests quickly; others can take four to six weeks. Build in enough lead time so a delayed birth certificate doesn't push back your wedding plans.
For previous marriages, bring a certified copy of the divorce decree or the death certificate of a prior spouse. A regular photocopy may not be accepted. Call (269) 383-8840 to confirm what format is required before your visit.
Note: You must be at least 18 to apply without parental consent. Applicants ages 16 and 17 need written parental approval. No one under 16 can receive a Michigan marriage license.
Fees and Waiting Period
Kalamazoo County charges $20 for residents and $30 for non-residents. Kalamazoo city residents qualify for the resident rate. If your partner lives outside Kalamazoo County, they may pay the non-resident fee. Confirm with the clerk when you call.
The three-day waiting period starts on the application date. Apply on Monday; Thursday is the earliest ceremony day. Confirm with the clerk how holidays affect the count if your timing is close.
Kalamazoo County's waiting period waiver fee is $35, making the total cost with a waiver $55 for a resident couple ($20 license + $35 waiver). This is among the highest waiver fees in Michigan. If you're considering a waiver, be aware of the cost and factor it into your planning. The waiver is not guaranteed and is at the judge's discretion.
Certified copies of marriage records from Kalamazoo County cost $20 for the first copy and $7 for each additional. Order extras when you first apply to avoid additional trips.
Note: Confirm all fees with the clerk at (269) 383-8840 before your visit since amounts can change.
Courthouse Ceremony Options in Kalamazoo
Kalamazoo has convenient civil ceremony options near downtown.
The 8th District Court at 227 W. Lovell Street, Kalamazoo, MI 49007, phone (269) 383-8765, is located close to the county clerk office. Civil marriage ceremonies are available. Call the court to ask about scheduling, availability, and fees. Some courts require advance scheduling; others allow walk-ins on certain days. Call before you finalize plans.
The Kalamazoo Mayor's Office at 241 W. South Street, Kalamazoo, MI 49007, phone (269) 337-8047, is another option. Michigan law authorizes mayors to perform marriage ceremonies. The mayor or an authorized designee can officiate. Contact the office well in advance to check availability, especially during busy wedding seasons.
Under MCL 551.7, authorized officiants in Michigan include judges, magistrates, mayors, county clerks, charter township supervisors, and ordained ministers. Verify your officiant's qualifications before your ceremony.
Note: The 8th District Court and the County Clerk are both located in downtown Kalamazoo within a short distance of each other. This makes it easy to apply for your license and schedule a ceremony in the same trip.
Getting Certified Copies of Your Marriage Record
After your ceremony is filed, certified copies are available from two sources.
From the Kalamazoo County Clerk at 201 W. Kalamazoo Avenue, Room 103, the cost is $20 for the first copy and $7 for each additional. Visit in person during office hours or call (269) 383-8840 to ask about mail-in options. The county record is usually available within a few days of the officiant filing the license.
Michigan MDHHS handles certified marriage record requests for Kalamazoo and Kalamazoo County residents, with state records dating back to 1867. However, since Kalamazoo County has records back to 1831, county copies predate the state's records for older marriages. For recent marriages, either source works.
The MDHHS is at 333 S. Grand Ave, Lansing, MI 48933, phone (517) 335-8666. State copies cost $34 for the first and $16 for each additional, with a $12 rush option. Order through VitalChek or in person by appointment. Visit michigan.gov/mdhhs for ordering details.
Michigan Marriage Laws
Michigan marriage statutes are in Chapter 551 of the Michigan Compiled Laws. MCL 551.101 sets the license requirement, waiting period, and eligibility rules. MCL 551.104 requires the officiant to return the signed license within 10 days after the ceremony.
