Southfield Michigan Marriage License
Southfield residents who need a marriage license apply through the Oakland County Clerk, not through the City of Southfield. Cities in Michigan do not issue marriage licenses; that task belongs to the county clerk. Oakland County handles all applications for Southfield residents at its main office in Pontiac, with a satellite location available by appointment. Both applicants must appear in person, bring required documents, and wait three days after applying before the license is valid.

Oakland County Clerk Office for Southfield Residents
Southfield sits in the southern part of Oakland County. The main clerk office is in Pontiac, about 25 miles north. A Troy satellite location operates by appointment on limited days and may be more convenient depending on where you are in Southfield.

Oakland County's online portal is available for purchasing certified copies of existing marriage records. This is not for new license applications; those still require a personal visit to the office.
Note: Both applicants must appear together. You cannot complete the process at separate times, and no one can apply on your behalf. This is a state law requirement for all Michigan counties.
How to Apply for a Marriage License in Southfield
You and your partner go to the Oakland County Clerk together, complete the application, show your documents, and pay the fee. The three-day waiting period starts on the application date. MCL 551.101 requires this wait under Michigan state law. The only exception is a judicial waiver, which costs extra and is not automatic.
Once the waiting period passes, the license is valid for 33 days. Your ceremony must happen in that window. Apply about a week before your ceremony to stay comfortable without risking the license expiring. If it does expire, you start over and pay again.
After the ceremony, your officiant must return the completed, signed license to the Oakland County Clerk within 10 days (MCL 551.104). Two witnesses who are 18 or older must sign at the ceremony. Go over these requirements with your officiant before the wedding day so nothing is left to chance.
Required Documents
Both applicants must bring the complete document set. One missing item means no license that day.
- Valid government-issued photo ID with your current Southfield address (driver's license or state ID)
- Certified birth certificate from a government vital records office (hospital birth records are not accepted)
- Social Security number for each applicant
- If previously married: certified divorce decree or death certificate for the former spouse
- Full names and birth states of both parents
The birth certificate requirement trips up many Southfield residents. The hospital birth record you've kept since birth does not satisfy this requirement. You need the certified version from the vital records office of the state where you were born. Michigan residents can request one from the MDHHS at (517) 335-8666. Out-of-state applicants need to contact their birth state's vital records office.
Processing times for certified birth certificates vary. Some states process within days; others take a month or longer. If you're from out of state or don't have your Michigan birth certificate on hand, start the process early. You don't want a missing document to delay your wedding plans.
Prior marriages add a step. Bring a certified divorce decree or a deceased spouse's death certificate. Call the Oakland County Clerk at (248) 858-0571 to confirm what format they need before you come in.
Note: You must be 18 or older to apply without parental consent. Applicants who are 16 or 17 need written parental approval. No one under 16 can receive a Michigan marriage license.
Fees and Waiting Period
Oakland County charges $20 for residents and $30 for non-residents. Southfield residents qualify at the resident rate. If your partner lives outside Oakland County, they may pay $30. Confirm with the clerk when you call.
The three-day wait starts on the application date. Apply on Tuesday; Friday is the earliest ceremony day. Count carefully if you're timing around a venue reservation. Call the clerk if a holiday falls during your three-day window.
Oakland County's waiting period waiver fee is just $5, among the lowest in the Detroit metro area. If you need to skip the wait, petition a judge and pay $5 in addition to the license fee. Total for a resident with waiver: $25. Waivers are not guaranteed and are at the judge's discretion.
Certified copies from Oakland County cost $15 for the first copy and $5 for each additional one. Order extras when you first apply so you don't have to make another trip later.
Note: Fees are subject to change. Verify current amounts at (248) 858-0571 before your visit.
Courthouse Ceremony Options in Southfield
Southfield has civil ceremony options right in the city.
The 46th District Court at 26000 Evergreen Road, Southfield, MI 48076, phone (248) 796-5800, is located at Southfield City Hall and can perform civil marriage ceremonies. Call the court to ask about scheduling, availability, and fees. Courts often have specific days or times for ceremonies, so call before making any plans.
The Southfield Mayor's Office is also at 26000 Evergreen Road, Southfield, MI 48076, phone (248) 796-5100, in the same building. Michigan law authorizes mayors to perform marriage ceremonies. Contact the office to ask about scheduling. Mayors are busy officials, so give plenty of notice if you want the mayor to officiate.
Both offices are in the Southfield Civic Center complex at Evergreen and 11 Mile, making it easy to check both options in one stop. Parking is available on site.
Under MCL 551.7, authorized officiants in Michigan include judges, magistrates, mayors, county clerks, charter township supervisors, and ordained ministers. Make sure your chosen officiant is on this list.

Michigan MDHHS handles certified marriage record requests for Southfield and Oakland County residents, with state records dating back to 1867. The MDHHS at 333 S. Michigan Marriage Laws
Michigan marriage statutes are in Chapter 551. MCL 551.101 covers the license requirement, waiting period, and eligibility. MCL 551.104 requires the officiant to return the signed license to the clerk within 10 days. These rules are the same for all Michigan residents, including those in Southfield.

After your ceremony, start your name change at the Social Security Administration. It's free. Then update your driver's license at the Michigan Secretary of State. Handle bank accounts, insurance policies, and employer records after those are done.
