Alpena County Marriage License Search

Alpena County residents obtain a marriage license through the county clerk's office on West Chisholm Street in Alpena, the county seat on Lake Huron's Thunder Bay. Both people who plan to marry must go to the office together, show valid ID, present a government-issued birth certificate, and sign a sworn statement before a clerk. Michigan law then requires a three-day waiting period before the license is ready for pickup. The license is good for 33 days from the application date.

How to Apply in Alpena County

The process in Alpena County is the same as the rest of Michigan. Both applicants go to the clerk's office. You fill out the application form. You both sign the affidavit in front of a clerk, which is required by MCL 551.102. Then you pay the fee and wait three days.

The waiting period starts the day you file. If you apply on a Monday, the earliest you can pick up the license is Thursday. If the third day falls on a holiday or weekend, wait until the next business day. Plan your application date with your ceremony date in mind so you don't end up in a bind.

You can apply to waive the waiting period. A judge must approve the waiver, and there is usually an additional fee. This is not guaranteed, and not all requests are approved. If you need the license urgently, contact the clerk to start that process as early as possible.

Requirements and Documents

Both people applying must bring the same set of documents. There are no shortcuts. The clerk cannot process the application without every item on this list.

  • Valid government-issued photo ID showing your current residential address
  • Official birth certificate issued by a government agency (not a hospital copy)
  • Social Security number for each applicant
  • Certified divorce decree or death certificate if either person was previously married
  • Full names and birthplaces of each applicant's parents

Age matters. Both applicants must be 18 or older to apply on their own. Those who are 16 or 17 need signed parental or guardian consent. No one under 16 can marry in Michigan. The clerk will check IDs. Don't bring expired identification or documents with a different address than where you currently live.

The affidavit you sign is sworn under penalty of perjury. MCL 551.108 makes it a crime to give false information when applying for a marriage license. Fill out the form honestly and completely.

Fees and Waiting Period

Alpena County residents pay $20 for a marriage license. Non-residents pay $30. You can apply as a non-resident if you plan to hold the ceremony in Alpena County, even if neither of you lives here. Bring proof of your ceremony location if possible.

The three-day waiting period is required by MCL 551.103a. It starts the day you submit the application. The license is valid for 33 days once issued. If your ceremony doesn't happen in that time, the license expires and you have to apply again. Mark both dates on your calendar: the pickup date and the expiration date.

Waiting period waivers cost extra. The amount varies. Ask the clerk's office what the current fee is if you need one. A judge must approve any waiver, and the process takes some time even after you request it.

Certified Copies and State Records

After your wedding, the officiant returns the completed license to the Alpena County Clerk within 10 days. That is required by MCL 551.104. The county then forwards the record to the MDHHS. Once filed at the state level, certified copies are available from the MDHHS.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) maintains state marriage records since 1867 and offers certified copies through their vital records portal. The first certified copy costs $34, each additional copy ordered at the same time is $16, and rush processing adds $12. Standard turnaround is four to five weeks.

You can request copies online or by mail at michigan.gov/mdhhs/doing-business/vitalrecords. The MDHHS can be reached by phone at (517) 335-8666 or in person at 333 S. Grand Ave, Lansing, MI 48933.

Michigan Marriage Laws

All Michigan counties follow the same state marriage laws found in Chapter 551 of the Michigan Compiled Laws. These cover everything from who can apply to how the record gets filed after the ceremony.

MCL 551.101 gives county clerks authority to issue licenses. The sworn affidavit requirement is in MCL 551.102. Age and waiting period rules come from MCL 551.103 and 551.103a. Post-ceremony filing is governed by MCL 551.104.

People who can perform legal ceremonies in Michigan include judges, magistrates, mayors, county clerks, and ordained ministers under MCL 551.7. Two adult witnesses, each at least 18 years old, must be present. The officiant must return the paperwork on time or face consequences under state law.

After the wedding, start your legal name change at the Social Security Administration. It's free. Next, visit the Secretary of State to update your driver's license. Then notify your bank, health insurance provider, and employer.
