How to Apply for an Ottawa County Marriage License
Under MCL 551.101, at least one applicant must be an Ottawa County resident to apply here. Both of you should come in person if possible. If only one person can make it, that person must bring valid identification and documentation for both parties. The clerk prefers both applicants to be present, but it is not always required when one person has all the paperwork.
Ottawa County also runs an online application at miottawa.org/MLR/. You can complete most of the form before your visit and save time at the counter. The application is a sworn affidavit under MCL 551.102. Both parties must provide their Social Security numbers. As of July 1, 2005, Social Security numbers are entered into the system but are not printed on the license and do not become part of the public record. Providing false information on the application is treated as perjury under Michigan law.
Both applicants must be at least 18. If one party is 16 or 17, a parent or guardian must be present at the time of application and must show a valid ID. No one under 16 may marry in Michigan. Out-of-state applicants must also be at least 18 with no exceptions at the Ottawa County Clerk.
Note: Ottawa County's online marriage license application lets you fill out most of the form before visiting Room 130 in person to complete the process.
Required Documents for Ottawa County Marriage License
Come prepared. Missing a document means coming back. The clerk will ask each applicant for a certified birth certificate and a driver's license or state-issued ID that shows your current address. The address on the ID must match an Ottawa County location for at least one applicant to qualify as a resident.
Here is what to bring for each applicant:
- Certified birth certificate (not a photocopy)
- Driver's license or state ID showing current address
- Social Security number for both parties
- Final Judgment of Divorce if either party was previously married
If you plan to marry in Ottawa County but live out of state, you may still apply here. Both applicants must be 18 or older and must present the same document set. The fee for out-of-state applicants is $30 instead of the standard $20 for Michigan residents.
Payment options at the Ottawa County Clerk include cash, money orders, MasterCard, and Visa. Note that credit and debit card payments may carry a service fee. Confirm with the office before your visit if that matters to your budget.
Ottawa County Marriage License Fees and Waiting Period
The fee to get a marriage license in Ottawa County is $20 for Michigan residents and $30 for non-residents. These amounts are set by state law. After the clerk issues your license, Michigan law requires a three-day wait before your ceremony can happen. This rule comes from MCL 551.103a. The license is valid for 33 days from the date it was issued. If your wedding is outside that window, the license expires and you'll need to start over.
Plan your ceremony date carefully. Three days after the issue date is the earliest you can marry. Thirty-three days after is the last. Most couples apply one to two weeks before the wedding to give themselves room. If both parties are at least 18 and there are no prior marriages to sort out, the application usually goes smoothly in a single visit.

Who Can Officiate in Ottawa County
Michigan law under MCL 551.7 lists who may perform a legal marriage ceremony. Judges, magistrates, mayors, ordained ministers, and county clerks are all authorized. Ottawa County does not have a county-run ceremony program, so couples who want a civil ceremony should contact a local judge or magistrate directly.
After the ceremony, your officiant must sign the license and return it to the Ottawa County Clerk within 10 days. That's required by MCL 551.104. The returned and signed license becomes the official marriage record on file with the county. Don't let the deadline slip. If the signed license is not returned in time, there can be issues with your official record.

Name Change After Your Ottawa County Wedding
Once the signed license is on file, you can begin updating your legal name. Start with the Social Security Administration at ssa.gov. You'll need your certified marriage certificate, current ID, and proof of citizenship. There is no fee for this update. After the SSA card is updated, go to the Michigan Secretary of State to get a new driver's license or state ID. Bring the updated SSA card and your marriage certificate. Use your new name on all forms going forward to avoid delays with other agencies.
