Antrim County is a popular wedding destination because of its lakes and scenic surroundings. If you're not a county resident but are marrying here, you can still apply at this office. Non-residents pay $30 instead of $20. Call ahead to confirm hours and any local procedures before making the drive.
How to Apply in Antrim County
Both applicants must be present when you apply. You cannot file on behalf of the other person. Each of you will sign the sworn affidavit in front of the clerk, which is a legal requirement under MCL 551.102. After that, you pay the fee and the three-day wait begins.
The waiting period starts on the day you apply. Count forward three full days to find out when you can pick up the license. If any of those days fall on a weekend or holiday, you may have to wait longer. Factor this into your ceremony planning.
A judge can waive the three-day waiting period in certain situations. There is usually an additional fee. The amount varies and is not set at a fixed statewide rate. If you need the license sooner than three days, contact the clerk's office to learn what your options are in Antrim County.
Michigan Courts outlines the legal requirements for marriage licenses and the statutes governing ceremonies across all 83 Michigan counties. See courts.michigan.gov for an overview of state marriage law.

Requirements and Documents
The Antrim County Clerk will ask for the same set of documents that every Michigan county requires. Have everything ready before you go so you don't have to make a second trip.
- Valid government-issued photo ID showing your current home address
- Official government-issued birth certificate (not a hospital-issued copy)
- Social Security number for both applicants
- Certified divorce decree or spouse's death certificate if either applicant was previously married
- Full names and birthplaces of both applicants' parents
Both applicants must be 18 years old or older to apply freely. Applicants who are 16 or 17 need parental or legal guardian consent. No one under 16 can marry in Michigan under any circumstances. The clerk will review IDs carefully if ages are near the threshold.
The affidavit is a sworn legal statement. Giving false information is a serious offense under MCL 551.108. Fill out the form carefully and make sure everything is accurate before you sign.
Fees and Waiting Period
Antrim County residents pay $20. Non-residents pay $30. These fees are state-mandated and apply throughout Michigan. Ask the clerk's office what payment methods they accept so you don't arrive without the right option.
The three-day waiting period is required by MCL 551.103a. It is not a processing delay; it is a legal requirement. The license cannot be issued before it ends. Once the license is issued, it is valid for 33 days. Keep track of both dates: the earliest you can pick it up and the date it expires.
Note: If the ceremony doesn't happen before the license expires, you'll need to apply again and pay the fee a second time. Plan your ceremony date with the 33-day window clearly in mind.
Certified Copies and Records
After your ceremony, the officiant must return the completed license to the Antrim County Clerk within 10 days. This is required by MCL 551.104. Failure to do so can create problems with the official record. Once filed, the record is forwarded to the state for permanent storage.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) maintains state marriage records since 1867 and offers certified copies through their vital records portal. The first certified copy costs $34. Each additional copy ordered at the same time is $16. Rush processing costs an extra $12. Standard processing takes four to five weeks.
Visit michigan.gov/mdhhs/doing-business/vitalrecords to order certified copies or to find out more about the state records process.
Order your certified copies as soon as possible after the ceremony if you need them for name changes or legal documents.
