How to Apply for a Grand Traverse County Marriage License
Michigan law under MCL 551.101 requires at least one applicant to be a Grand Traverse County resident to apply at this office. If your ceremony will take place in Grand Traverse County but neither of you lives here, you still apply in the county where the wedding happens. Only one person needs to appear in person at the clerk's office. That person brings documents for both applicants. The second party can stay home.
The application itself is a sworn affidavit under MCL 551.102. Both Social Security numbers are required. You sign under oath and the information you provide is treated as a legal statement. Under Michigan law, false statements made in this context are considered perjury. Fill in the form accurately, and ask the clerk at (231) 922-4760 if you're uncertain about any field before you sign.
Both applicants must be at least 18. If one party is 16 or 17, written parental consent is required before the Grand Traverse County Clerk can issue the license. No one under 16 may legally marry in Michigan.
Note: The Grand Traverse County Clerk's office at 400 Boardman Ave. accepts walk-in marriage license applications Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM.
Documents to Bring for a Grand Traverse County Marriage License
Getting your Grand Traverse County marriage license is straightforward if you come prepared. The clerk needs to confirm who you are, how old you are, where you live, and whether either of you has been married before. Pull all of this together before your trip to Traverse City.
Both applicants need to provide:
- Valid driver's license or state-issued ID showing a current Grand Traverse County address
- Birth certificate or passport to verify age
- Social Security numbers for both parties
- Divorce decree or death certificate if either party was previously married
If your ID address shows a county other than Grand Traverse, you'll pay the non-resident fee of $30 rather than the resident rate of $20. Out-of-county applicants are not turned away, but the residency status does affect cost. Check your ID address before you go.
Grand Traverse County Marriage License Fees
The fee is $20 for residents and $30 for non-residents. These amounts are set by Michigan law and are standard across most of the state. Call the Grand Traverse County Clerk at (231) 922-4760 to confirm current payment methods before you head to 400 Boardman Ave.
After the clerk issues your Grand Traverse County marriage license, you must wait three days before the ceremony can take place. This is required under MCL 551.103a. The license stays valid for 33 days from the issue date. Both the three-day wait and the 33-day expiration window are fixed by state law with no routine exceptions. If your wedding is more than 33 days away, wait to apply. If it's less than three days away, you'll need to look at waiver options through the court. Plan around both deadlines before you go to the clerk.

Marriage Ceremonies in Grand Traverse County
Michigan law under MCL 551.7 says who can legally perform a marriage. The list includes judges, magistrates, mayors, ordained ministers, and county clerks. Grand Traverse County couples have wide options when it comes to who officiates. A ceremony in Traverse City at a courthouse, a church, or an outdoor venue all work as long as the right person is officiating.
After your ceremony, your officiant must sign the Grand Traverse County marriage license and return it to the clerk's office within 10 days. This is the legal requirement under MCL 551.104. The officiant is responsible for this step. It's not on you, but you should confirm your officiant knows the deadline before the wedding. A signed license that gets lost or forgotten can delay your ability to get a certified copy and cause problems with name changes and other legal matters.
