Arenac County Marriage License

Arenac County marriage license applications go through the county clerk's office in Standish, a small city along Saginaw Bay in Michigan's Lower Peninsula. Both people who intend to marry must go to the office at the same time, show valid photo ID with their current address, and sign a sworn affidavit before the clerk approves the application. State law requires a three-day waiting period before the license is ready. The license stays valid for 33 days, so plan your ceremony within that period.

How to Apply in Arenac County

Both applicants must appear at the clerk's office in person. You cannot start the process alone or mail in any part of the application. Each person signs the sworn affidavit in front of a clerk as required by MCL 551.102. After you file and pay the fee, the three-day waiting period begins.

Count three full days forward from the day you apply. If day three is a weekend or holiday, the earliest pickup date shifts to the next business day. Don't schedule your ceremony on the third day itself without confirming the office will be open and the license will be ready.

Waiting period waivers are possible in Arenac County. A judge must approve the waiver. There is usually an added cost. Contact the clerk's office if you need the license within three days to find out how to request a waiver and what the current fee is.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) maintains state marriage records since 1867 and offers certified copies through their vital records portal. You can learn more at michigan.gov/mdhhs/doing-business/vitalrecords.

Requirements and Documents

Every county clerk in Michigan needs the same set of documents from both applicants. Arenac County is no different. Missing a single item means you cannot complete the application that day.

  • Valid government-issued photo ID with current home address
  • Official birth certificate issued by a government office (not a hospital birth record)
  • Social Security number for each applicant
  • Certified divorce decree or death certificate of a former spouse, if applicable
  • Full names and birthplaces of each applicant's parents

Age rules are strict. Both applicants must be 18 or older to apply on their own. Those who are 16 or 17 need written consent from a parent or legal guardian. No one under 16 may marry in Michigan. The clerk will verify ages and will ask for additional documentation if there is any doubt.

The affidavit is a legal sworn statement. MCL 551.108 makes it a crime to provide false information on a marriage license application. Read the form carefully before signing.

Fees and Waiting Period

The fee for Arenac County residents is $20. Non-residents pay $30. These amounts are set by state law. Ask whether the office takes cash, check, or card before you go so you don't have a problem at the window.

The three-day waiting period is not optional. It is required by MCL 551.103a. The license becomes available on the fourth day, not the third. Once issued, the license is valid for 33 days. Plan your ceremony within that 33-day window. If the license expires, you start over from scratch, including paying the fee again.

Note: Waivers of the waiting period require a judge's approval and come with an additional cost. They are not automatically granted. Contact the clerk well before your ceremony date if you think you might need one.

Certified Copies and Records

After the ceremony, your officiant has 10 days to return the signed license to the Arenac County Clerk. This requirement comes from MCL 551.104. Once filed, the record goes to the state. You can then order certified copies from the MDHHS or from the county.

State certified copies cost $34 for the first and $16 for each additional copy ordered together. Adding rush processing costs $12 more. Standard turnaround is four to five weeks. MDHHS is located at 333 S. Grand Ave, Lansing, MI 48933, and can be reached at (517) 335-8666.
