Ithaca is the county seat and is centrally located within the county. If you are coming from a nearby township, the drive is typically under 20 minutes. Contact the office before your visit to confirm hours and current payment options.

How to Apply

Both applicants show up at the clerk's office together. You fill out a short form, present your ID and other documents, and pay the fee. The clerk checks everything on the spot. If all is in order, you leave with the license that day.

After you get the license, you must wait 3 days before you can hold the ceremony. The wait starts on the day you apply. If you apply on a Wednesday, you can marry as early as Saturday. Weekends and holidays count toward those 3 days, so factor that in when setting your date.

The license is valid for 33 days. If you don't use it in time, it expires and you have to start over. Note: If you need to waive the 3-day wait, you must petition the Gratiot County Circuit Court. The judge decides whether to grant it, and there is a court fee involved.

Documents Required

Each applicant must bring their own set of documents. Do not assume one set covers both people.

  • Valid government-issued photo ID showing your current address
  • Government-issued birth certificate (certified, not from a hospital)
  • Social Security number (card preferred)
  • Certified divorce decree or death certificate for each prior marriage, if applicable
  • Full legal names of both your parents and the state they were born in
  • If you are 16 or 17: a parent or legal guardian must come with you and sign a consent form

If your photo ID doesn't include your current address, a recent utility bill or lease works as supplementary proof. Non-residents of Michigan who are marrying in Gratiot County pay $30; Michigan residents pay $20.

Fees and Waiting Period

The fee is $20 for Michigan residents and $30 for non-residents, per MCL 551.101. You pay when you apply. There are no partial refunds if you cancel the wedding later.

Michigan law requires a 3-day waiting period statewide. Gratiot County follows that rule. The only way to skip it is through a court order from the Gratiot County Circuit Court. Judges review requests on a case-by-case basis. Most couples don't pursue this option and simply plan ahead. No extra county fees apply beyond the license fee itself.

Certified Copies of Your Marriage Record

After the ceremony, your officiant must sign the completed marriage license and return it to the Gratiot County Clerk within 10 days. MCL 551.104 requires this. Once the clerk records it, the marriage is part of both the county and state vital records systems.

To get a certified copy from the state, contact the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) at 333 S. Grand Ave, Lansing, MI 48933, (517) 335-8666. The first certified copy is $34. Additional copies cost $16 each. Rush processing adds $12 and takes 2 to 3 weeks; standard requests take 4 to 5 weeks. Order online through the MDHHS portal via VitalChek, or make an in-person appointment for Tuesdays and Thursdays between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM in Lansing.

Certified copies are also available from the Gratiot County Clerk and may be faster and less expensive. Call the office for current pricing. Historical records dating back to 1867 are searchable through Michiganology.org, which is free to use.

Michigan Marriage Law

MCL 551.101 is the main statute governing Michigan marriage licenses. It covers the in-person requirement, fees, waiting period, and license validity. MCL 551.102 addresses where residents and non-residents must apply.

Authorized officiants under MCL 551.7 include judges, magistrates, mayors, county clerks, and ordained ministers. Two witnesses age 18 or older must be present. The officiant must return the signed license to the county clerk within 10 days per MCL 551.104.

Minimum age to marry: 18 without parental consent. Ages 16 to 17 may marry with consent. No one under 16 may marry in Michigan.

Name Change After Marriage

Once you have a certified copy of your marriage record, you can start the name change process. Go to the Social Security Administration first; there is no fee. Then visit a Michigan Secretary of State office to update your driver's license. From there, notify your bank, employer, insurance company, and any other institutions. A certified copy of the marriage record is what most agencies require as proof.
