Mount Pleasant is home to Central Michigan University and is a mid-sized city in the center of the Lower Peninsula. The clerk's office is in the county courthouse on Main Street. If you are coming from a surrounding county, call first to confirm you're applying at the right location based on your residency.

How to Apply for a Marriage License

Both applicants go to the clerk's office together, complete the application, present their documents, and pay the fee. The clerk reviews everything. If all is correct, you leave with the license that day. The typical visit takes 20 to 30 minutes when you have everything ready.

Michigan requires a 3-day waiting period from the date you apply before you can hold the ceremony. Apply on a Monday and the first eligible day for your ceremony is Thursday. The 3 days count every day, including weekends and holidays. Factor that into your wedding planning early.

Your license is valid for 33 days from the date of issue. If the ceremony doesn't happen in that time, the license is void. You would need to reapply and pay again. Note: The waiting period can be waived by the Isabella County Circuit Court if you have an urgent situation, but you must petition the court and pay a separate fee.

Documents Required

Both applicants must bring the following. Each person needs their own documents; one set does not serve both.

  • Valid government-issued photo ID showing your current address
  • Government-issued birth certificate (certified copy, not a hospital record)
  • Social Security number (bring your card if you have one)
  • Certified divorce decree or death certificate for each previous marriage
  • Full legal names of your parents and the state each parent was born in
  • If 16 or 17: a parent or legal guardian must appear in person and provide written consent

If your ID doesn't show your current address, a utility bill, bank statement, or lease serves as additional proof. Non-residents pay $30; Michigan residents pay $20. Check the clerk's office for accepted payment methods before your visit.

Fees and the Waiting Period

Isabella County follows the Michigan standard fee of $20 for residents and $30 for non-residents, per MCL 551.101. Fees are collected when you apply. No refunds are given, even if you cancel your plans after receiving the license.

The 3-day waiting period is a statewide requirement. Paying extra to the clerk will not bypass it. A waiver requires a petition to the circuit court, a filing fee, and a judge's approval. Most couples simply build those 3 days into their schedule. There are no other fees from the county beyond the license fee itself.

Certified Copies of Your Marriage Record

After your ceremony, the officiant must sign the license and return it to the Isabella County Clerk within 10 days. This is required by MCL 551.104. The clerk then registers the marriage locally and sends the data to the state vital records system.

Certified copies through the state are available from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) at 333 S. Grand Ave, Lansing, MI 48933, phone (517) 335-8666. First copy: $34. Each additional copy at the same time: $16. Rush service adds $12 and typically takes 2 to 3 weeks; standard orders take 4 to 5 weeks. Order through the MDHHS portal via VitalChek, or visit in person by appointment on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM in Lansing.

You can also request certified copies from the Isabella County Clerk. Local copies are often faster. Historical Michigan records going back to 1867 can be found for free through Michiganology.org.

Michigan Marriage License Statutes

MCL 551.101 covers the requirements: in-person application, 3-day wait, and 33-day validity. MCL 551.102 handles where to apply. If you live in Michigan, apply in your county of residence. If neither applicant is a Michigan resident, apply in the county where the ceremony will be held.

Under MCL 551.7, authorized officiants include judges, magistrates, mayors, county clerks, and ordained ministers. Two witnesses who are 18 or older must attend the ceremony. The officiant must return the signed license to the county clerk within 10 days per MCL 551.104.

Age minimums: 18 without consent; 16 or 17 with parental consent; under 16 cannot marry in Michigan.

Name Change After Marriage

Your certified marriage record is your proof of name change. Go to the Social Security Administration first (no fee). Then update your driver's license at the Michigan Secretary of State. After that, contact your bank, employer, and insurance company. Most will require a certified copy, so order several when you get your first one.
