Huron County is at the tip of Michigan's Thumb peninsula. Bad Axe is the only city in the county and is easily accessible from neighboring Thumb counties. Call the clerk before your visit if you have questions about documents or payment methods.
Applying for a Marriage License
Both applicants go to the clerk's office together, fill out the application, present their documents, and pay the fee. The clerk reviews everything and hands you the license the same day if all is in order. A typical visit takes 20 to 30 minutes.
A 3-day waiting period begins the day you apply. Apply on a Tuesday, and the earliest you can marry is Friday. The 3 days count every day, including weekends and holidays. When you set your wedding date, count at least 3 days forward from the day you plan to apply.
Your license is good for 33 days from the application date. If your ceremony doesn't happen in that time, the license becomes invalid. You would need to apply again and pay the full fee. Note: If urgent circumstances exist, you can ask the Huron County Circuit Court to waive the 3-day wait, but that requires a petition and a court fee.
Documents Needed
Both applicants must bring their own full set of documents. Don't assume one person's documents are enough for two.
- Valid government-issued photo ID showing your current address
- Certified birth certificate from a government vital records office
- Social Security number (bring the card if you have it)
- Certified divorce decree or death certificate for any prior marriage
- Full legal names of your parents and the state each parent was born in
- If 16 or 17 years old: a parent or legal guardian must come and give written consent
If your ID doesn't show your current address, a utility bill or bank statement works as supporting proof. Non-residents who will marry in Huron County pay $30. Michigan residents pay $20.
Fees and the 3-Day Wait
The license fee is $20 for residents and $30 for non-residents. This is set by MCL 551.101 and is collected at the time of application. It is not refundable if your plans change.
Michigan's 3-day waiting period applies uniformly across all counties, including Huron. A waiver requires a circuit court petition and judicial approval. There is no way to pay the county clerk extra to skip the wait. Most couples simply build those 3 days into their planning. There are no other county fees associated with the marriage license itself.
Getting Certified Copies
After the ceremony, the officiant must sign the license and return it to the Huron County Clerk within 10 days. This is a legal requirement under MCL 551.104. Once the clerk registers the marriage, the record is part of both county and state vital records.
Certified copies from the state are available through the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). Reach them at 333 S. Grand Ave, Lansing, MI 48933, or call (517) 335-8666. The first copy is $34. Additional copies ordered together are $16 each. Rush adds $12 and takes 2 to 3 weeks; standard turnaround is 4 to 5 weeks. Order through the MDHHS VitalChek portal, or visit in person by appointment Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM in Lansing.
The Huron County Clerk can also provide certified copies. Local copies are often faster. Call the office for current fees. For historical records going back to 1867, Michiganology.org offers free digital access to Michigan vital records.
Michigan Marriage License Statutes
MCL 551.101 lays out the requirements for all Michigan marriage licenses: both parties apply in person, there is a 3-day wait, and the license is valid for 33 days. MCL 551.102 explains where to apply based on residency.
Officiants allowed under MCL 551.7 include judges, magistrates, mayors, county clerks, and ordained ministers. Two witnesses at least 18 years old must attend the ceremony. The officiant returns the signed license to the county clerk within 10 days per MCL 551.104.
Age requirements: 18 to marry without consent; 16 or 17 with parental consent; under 16 cannot marry in Michigan.
Name Change After Marriage
A certified copy of your marriage license is the document you need to change your name. Start at the Social Security Administration (free). Then go to the Michigan Secretary of State for your driver's license. After that, update your name with your bank, employer, insurance company, and any other agencies that need to know. Bring certified copies since most places will want to see proof.
