Ionia County sits between Kent County (Grand Rapids) and the center of the state. If you live in a neighboring county, confirm which clerk office you should use based on your residency. Non-residents who plan to marry in Ionia County can apply here. Call the office if you're unsure or need to confirm hours.

How to Apply

Both applicants arrive at the clerk's office together. You fill out the application, show your documents, and pay the fee. If everything is correct, you receive the license that day. The process usually takes 20 to 30 minutes when documents are ready.

After receiving the license, you must wait 3 days before the ceremony. The wait starts on the day you apply. Apply on a Thursday and you can marry on Sunday at the earliest. The 3 days include weekends and holidays. Keep this in mind when scheduling your ceremony.

The license is valid for 33 days. If you don't use it in time, it expires. You'd need to start the whole process over and pay the fee again. Note: If you have a compelling reason to bypass the 3-day wait, you can petition the Ionia County Circuit Court. A judge decides whether to grant it, and a court fee applies.

Required Documents

Both applicants must each bring the same set of items. One set does not cover both people.

  • Valid government-issued photo ID with your current address
  • Government-issued birth certificate (certified, not a hospital copy)
  • Social Security number (bring your card if available)
  • Certified divorce decree or death certificate for any prior marriages
  • Full legal names of your parents and the state each was born in
  • If 16 or 17: a parent or legal guardian must be present and sign a consent form

If your ID doesn't show your current address, a recent utility bill or bank statement works as supplemental proof. Michigan residents pay $20; non-residents pay $30. Check with the clerk about what forms of payment they accept before you visit.

Fees and the Waiting Period

The fee in Ionia County is $20 for Michigan residents and $30 for non-residents, as set by MCL 551.101. You pay at the time of application. Fees are not refunded if you cancel or change your plans.

Michigan's mandatory 3-day waiting period applies here just like everywhere else in the state. You can't pay extra to skip it at the county level. Waiving the wait requires a circuit court petition. The judge decides, and approval isn't guaranteed. Most couples simply account for those 3 days in their wedding timeline rather than seeking a waiver.

Getting Certified Copies

When the ceremony is over, the officiant must sign the license and return it to the Ionia County Clerk within 10 days. This is a legal duty under MCL 551.104. After the clerk records the marriage, it becomes part of both local and state vital records.

To order a certified copy from the state, contact the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) at 333 S. Grand Ave, Lansing, MI 48933 or (517) 335-8666. The first copy is $34. Additional copies ordered at the same time are $16. Rush service adds $12 and takes 2 to 3 weeks; standard orders take 4 to 5 weeks. Order through the MDHHS portal via VitalChek, or visit in person by appointment Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM in Lansing.

The Ionia County Clerk can also provide certified copies, and local copies are typically faster and cheaper. The MDHHS has records going back to 1867. For older historical records, Michiganology.org is a free resource for Michigan vital records research.

Michigan Marriage License Law

Michigan law governs marriage licenses statewide. MCL 551.101 covers the core requirements, including in-person application and the 3-day wait. MCL 551.102 addresses residency and where to apply.

Under MCL 551.7, authorized officiants include judges, magistrates, mayors, county clerks, and ordained ministers. Two witnesses age 18 or older must be at the ceremony. The officiant signs the license and returns it to the county clerk within 10 days as required by MCL 551.104.

Minimum age to marry: 18 without consent; 16 or 17 with parental consent; under 16 cannot marry in Michigan.

Name Change After Your Wedding

Your certified marriage license is the key document for changing your name. Go to the Social Security Administration first (free). Then update your driver's license at a Michigan Secretary of State office. After that, notify your bank, employer, insurance company, and any other agencies. Certified copies will be requested as proof at most places.
