Iosco County sits along Lake Huron in the northeastern Lower Peninsula. Tawas City is a small community on Tawas Bay, and the clerk's office is centrally located for county residents. Visitors planning lakeside or cabin weddings in the area often apply here as non-residents. Call ahead to confirm hours and payment options before visiting.

Applying for a Marriage License

Both applicants go to the clerk's office together. You fill out the application form there, hand over your documents, and pay the fee. The clerk checks everything. If all is in order, you leave with the license. The visit usually takes 20 to 30 minutes with complete paperwork.

Michigan requires a 3-day waiting period starting on the day you apply. Apply on a Saturday, and Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday count as days one, two, and three. That means the earliest you can hold the ceremony is Wednesday. Plan your wedding date with at least 3 full days after the day you plan to apply.

The license is valid for 33 days from the date you receive it. If your ceremony falls outside that window, the license expires and you must start over. Note: The 3-day waiting period can be waived by a circuit court judge for urgent reasons, but a petition and court fee are required, and approval is not certain.

What to Bring

Each applicant must bring their own complete set of documents. Review this list before your visit so you don't have to make a second trip.

  • Valid government-issued photo ID with your current address
  • Government-issued birth certificate (certified copy from a vital records office)
  • Social Security number (have your card if possible)
  • Certified divorce decree or death certificate if either applicant was previously married
  • Full legal names of your parents and the state where each parent was born
  • If you are 16 or 17: a parent or legal guardian must appear with you and give written consent

If your photo ID does not show your current address, bring a utility bill, bank statement, or lease as additional proof. Non-residents pay $30; Michigan residents pay $20. Confirm accepted payment types with the clerk's office before you go.

Fees and the Waiting Period

Iosco County follows the Michigan state fee schedule: $20 for residents, $30 for non-residents, as set under MCL 551.101. You pay when you apply, and there are no refunds for any reason, including if your ceremony is canceled.

The mandatory 3-day waiting period applies in Iosco County the same way it does everywhere in Michigan. Skipping it requires a petition to the local circuit court and a judge's approval. Most couples plan around it rather than go through that process. No additional county fees are charged beyond the basic license fee.

Certified Copies of Your Marriage Record

After your ceremony, the officiant signs the license and must return it to the Iosco County Clerk within 10 days. This is required by MCL 551.104. The clerk registers the marriage locally and submits it to the state's vital records system.

State-certified copies are available from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) at 333 S. Grand Ave, Lansing, MI 48933. Call (517) 335-8666. The first certified copy is $34. Extra copies ordered at the same time are $16 each. Rush service adds $12 and typically takes 2 to 3 weeks; standard requests take 4 to 5 weeks. Order online through the MDHHS portal via VitalChek, or schedule an in-person visit on Tuesdays or Thursdays from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM in Lansing.

The Iosco County Clerk can provide certified copies as well. County-level copies are often processed faster. Call for current pricing. Historical Michigan marriage records going back to 1867 are available for free through Michiganology.org.

Michigan Marriage License Law

MCL 551.101 governs the basics: both parties apply in person, wait 3 days, and the license is good for 33 days. MCL 551.102 determines where to apply. Residents apply in their home county; non-residents apply in the county where the ceremony takes place.

Officiants authorized by MCL 551.7 include judges, magistrates, mayors, county clerks, and ordained ministers. You need at least two witnesses who are 18 or older at the ceremony. The officiant must sign and return the license to the county clerk within 10 days under MCL 551.104.

Minimum age: 18 without consent; 16 or 17 with parental consent; under 16 cannot marry in Michigan.

Changing Your Name After Marriage

Your certified marriage license is the proof of name change. Begin with the Social Security Administration (no cost). Then update your driver's license at the Secretary of State. After that, notify your bank, employer, and insurance company. Most will need to see a certified copy. Order a few when you request your first one.

State Records Resources

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Division for Vital Records maintains state marriage records since 1867 and processes certified copy requests.
